Thar coalfield is located in South Eastern Part of
Sindh at about 380 kilometers East of Karachi. It spreads over
an area of 9,100 sq. km. with dimensions of 140 km (north-south)
65 km (east-west). The total potential of Thar is estimated at
175 billion tons of lignite coal which may be sufficient to
produce 100,000 MW electricity for 200 years.
The geographically explored area of Thar
coal field is divided into thirteen blocks which have been
allocated to various companies by Government of Sindh.
So far the following three companies have completed
bankable mining feasibility study on Thar coal:
Sino Sindh Resources Private Limited (Block I)
Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (Block II)
Oracle Coalfields, PLC UK (Block VI)
Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC) (a joint Venture company
of Engro Powergen Limited and Government of Sindh) is at
advanced stage of developing 2 x 300 MW power project based on
Thar coal which would be expanded upto 5,000 MW in future.
