MINISTER FOR FULLEST SUPPORT TO UPCOMING IPPs

Islamabad 14th, April 2011: The upcoming IPPs will be extended fullest support by the government in their endeavours to bring in the much needed electricity in the country. This was stated by the Minister for Water & Power Syed Naveed Qamar while chairing 87th meeting of the Board of Private Power and Infrastructure Board (PPIB) held today. Meeting was attended by the Secretary Water and Power Mr. Javed Iqbal, Secretary Petroleum and Natural Resources Mr. Imtiaz Kazi, Chairman WAPDA Mr. Shakil Durrani and Managing Director PPIB Mr. N. A. Zuberi, besides Directors of PPIB and other senior government officials, and private members of the Board.

Overall situation of electricity demand-supply in the country was reviewed by the Board.  Managing Director PPIB while briefing on the progress of Private Power Projects informed that nine (9) IPPs of more than 1,800 MW have already been commissioned since March 2009 whereas another three (3) IPPs of 600 MW are expected to start functioning during next month. It was further conveyed to the Board that currently PPIB is processing thirty one IPP Projects of 8,600 MW cumulative capacity which will be completed from 2011 to 2017. The Honorable Minister appreciated the contribution of PPIB to combat current electricity shortfall challenge and commented that he appreciates that PPIB is manned with professionals who work in a transparent manner. 

Due to the genuine difficulties faced by the sponsors, the Board extended Financial Closure date of 375 MW Uch-II Power Project to 15th May, 2011 to facilitate them in firming up their financial arrangements for an early construction start of the project. Board also approved the Implementation and Power Purchase Agreements of Star Hydro for developing 147 MW Patrind Hydropower Project in Muzaffarabad, AJ&K. ENDS
